The music is a bit like a sunny day because it is in a major key, which makes it sound happy, although there could be some clouds because there were some minor key phrases too. There were no trills so the music could not be from the Baroque era. The piece was quite short in length and had dynamics. There was a melody and accompaniment and the tune was very pretty. The music was in a major key but with some modulations to the minor and there was plenty of rubato. The sustaining pedal was used and the harmonies were often adventurous. The mood was lighthearted at first, then became more passionate, louder and thicker in texture. The music was from the 20th century - we can tell because of the cross-rhythm effect between the melody and accompaniment in the latter part of the piece.The musical style and the expressive, rubato playing suggest the Romantic era. In Grade 1 you were only required to state whether this change was at the beginning or the end of the melody. They will then play the same melody on the piano but with a change. The examiner will play a short two bar melody on the piano. Again, much like in the Grade 1 Aural training, this test will require candidates to identify a change. Note: The Grade 8 ABRSM aural tests are very similar in concept to the Grade 7 aural tests, but need slightly more advanced musical skills.
